2021 Professional Farm Manager of the Year Award Contest
Official Rules


ELIGIBILITY: The 2021 Professional Farm Manager of the Year Award Contest (the “Contest”) is open only to Nominators who are legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia who are at least the age of majority in their state of residence (“Nominator”).

Nominees must be legal residents of one of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia who are at least the age of majority in their state of residence, have at least five (5) years farm management experience and be a member of the American Society of Farm Managers & Rural Appraisers (“Entrant/Nominee”).

Officers, directors, agents and employees of Syngenta, American Society of Farm Managers & Rural Appraisers (“ASFMRA”), Farm Journal, Inc., and each of their respective affiliates and subsidiaries, as well as the advertising and promotion agencies and suppliers involved in this Contest, and/or those living in the same household of each are not eligible to be a Nominator or a Nominee.

Past winners of the Professional Farm Manager of the Year Award from the previous thirty-five (35) years, are not eligible to win this Contest.

AGREEMENT TO OFFICIAL RULES: Participation in this Contest constitutes Nominator’s full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules and Sponsor’s decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to this Contest. Winning the prize is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein.

NOMINATION PERIOD: Nomination period begins at 12:00:00 AM Eastern Time (“ET”) on March 15, 2021, and ends at 11:59:59 PM ET on May 15, 2021 (“Nomination Period”). The Sponsor’s computer is the official time-keeping device for the Contest.

HOW TO NOMINATE: During the Nomination Period visit www.farmmanageroftheyear.com and select if you are nominating an individual Entrant or a “Team” (as defined below), then follow the directions to complete the required fields on the online nomination form. A Nominee may be the Nominator or another individual.

An eligible team is two (2) or more eligible Nominees/Entrants who work in the same office and jointly manage farms or assets together for common landowners, collaborate on a regular basis in reference to the management of those accounts and assets, share resources and have the same client contacts in the same region (“Team”). Teams cannot consist of individuals who work for a company that has offices in more than two (2) U.S. states. All members of the Team must meet all eligibility requirements, including age requirements.

There are no limits to the number of nominations a Nominator may make, but there is a limit of one (1) nomination per Nominee/Team per Nominator. Subsequent entries received from a Nominator for the same Nominee/Team will be disqualified. Once a Nomination is submitted, it may not be edited or resubmitted. No correspondence regarding the screening or verification of Nominations will be undertaken by Sponsor, except as specified in these Official Rules. Nominators enter on behalf of the Nominee/Team named in the Nomination. If not nominating themselves, Nominators are not eligible to receive an award.

No correspondence regarding Entries will be entered into with Entrants/Nominators/Teams, except as specified in these rules. All Entries will be reviewed for compliance with these Official Rules.

Once a nomination is received, the Sponsor will attempt to contact the corresponding Nominee/Team and provide a “Finalist Form” to complete. The completed Finalist Forms must be mailed to: G&S Business Communications, Attn: Aidan McGreevy, 125 S. Wacker Dr., Suite 2600, Chicago, IL 60606, postmarked by June 21, 2021, and received no later than June 24, 2021. Or Entrants/Teams can email the completed Finalist Form to: amcgreevy@gscommunications.com by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on June 21, 2021.

The two (2) references provided in the Finalist Form will each be emailed a “Reference Form” to the email address that the Nominator provided for the respective reference. The person named as the reference must answer question(s) for at least two (2) categories on the Reference Form. The completed Reference Form must be mailed to: G&S Business Communications, Attn: Aidan McGreevy, 125 S. Wacker Dr., Suite 2600, Chicago, IL 60606, postmarked by July 21, 2021, and received no later than July 23, 2021. Or completed Reference Form can be emailed to: amcgreevy@gscommunications.com by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on July 21, 2021.

The Nominator’s answer, Nominee’s completed Finalist Form and the Nominee’s two (2) completed Reference Forms (collectively, the “Entry”) will be judged using the judging criteria listed below to determine the highest scoring Entrant/Team from among all eligible Entries/Nominations.

CONTEST JUDGING: On or about June 25, 2021, a panel of qualified judges determined by Sponsor, will judge each entry based on the following criteria:

Nominator’s answer to the question:
  • Why do you believe the individual or team you nominated should be considered for the Professional Farm Manager of the Year Award? Include one (1) of the following topics in your answer: (5%)
    • How successful has your nominee been with retaining clients over the past three years?
    • Describe innovative crop protection practices your nominee has implemented, including soil and water conservation
    • What is the average crop yield across the farms your nominee manages and what has your nominee done to ensure marketing success
    • Which agricultural and/or non-agricultural service organizations is your nominee actively involved with?
    • Given the changing economic and environmental conditions facing agricultural producers, what capital improvements or conservation measures has your nominee implemented on the land he/she manages?
Nominee’s answers to the questions in each Category on the Finalist Form:
  • Category 1 – Retention of Clients (20%)
    • How long have you been employed/self-employed in the Farm Management industry?
    • Excluding clients that have sold their farm(s), what percentage of your clients have you retained from three years ago?
    • Describe your philosophy for communication with clients, such as frequency, feedback, problem solving or other relevant uses where interaction is required.
    • What is your approach to new business development and client retention?
    • Explain how the innovative crop production practices you’ve implemented have contributed to improved crop yields and/or a more marketable crop.
    • Explain your approach to crop marketing, including how your work with your clients to make decisions.
  • Category 2 - Innovative crop protection practices (20%)
    • What innovative crop production practices have you implemented on the land you manage?
    • What was the most successful innovation you implemented on the land you manage and what effect did it have?
  • Category 3 - Average crop yields and marketing success (20%)
    • Describe any of your activities in seeking new markets or uses for your crop that affect the average selling price.
    • Complete the Acres Managed, Yield and Selling Price table
  • Category 4- Involvement in agricultural and non-agricultural service organizations (10%)
    • List the ag-focused organizations in which you are an active member, when you became a member and describe your involvement.
    • List the non-ag service organizations in which you are an active member, when you became a member and describe your involvement.
  • Category 5 – Ability to adapt to the changing economic and environmental conditions facing agriculture (20%)
    • Given the changing economic and environmental conditions facing agricultural producers, what capital improvements or conservation measures have you implemented on the land you manage?
    • What risk management tools do you use on behalf of your clients?
    • What are the major challenges and opportunities facing professional farm managers? How are you addressing these challenges and maximizing these opportunities?
Reference’s answers to the questions to two (2) of the above listed categories on Reference Form: (5%)

After evaluation of the Nominee's responses to questions in each of the above categories, the panel of judges will determine the winner based on the Nominee with the highest score. In the event of a tie, the tie will be broken based on the highest score for the “Retention of Clients” category. If a tie remains, it will then be broken based on the highest score for the Average crop yields and marketing success” category. Judges’ decisions are final on all matters relating to this Contest.

ONE (1) PRIZE AND APPROXIMATE RETAIL VALUE (“ARV”): One (1) winner will receive one (1) personalized plaque. ARV: $100. Prize must be accepted as awarded. Prize is awarded “AS IS” with no warranty, representation, or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law, made by Sponsor or for which Sponsor shall be liable, including, without limitation, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, NON-INFRINGEMENT OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize of equal or greater value if advertised prize is unavailable for any reason. No substitution, cash redemption or transfer of prize by winner permitted. All federal, state and local taxes are the sole responsibility of winner. In addition, Sponsor will make a $1,000 donation to a recognized, reputable, legal 501(c)(3) involved in agriculture and/or farming or other legally recognized agriculture charity or not-for-profit agriculture organization in good standing, as selected by the winner. The charity selected is subject to Sponsor's final approval.

NOTIFICATION: The winner will be announced during the 2021 ASFMRA Annual Convention scheduled to take place November 2-5, 2021, at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in Las Vegas, NV. The winner does not need to be present at announcement.

REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES/INDEMNIFICATION: Entrants/Nominators/Teams represent and warrants as follows: (i) the Submission is the Entrant’s/Nominator’s/Team’s own original, previously unpublished, and previously unproduced work; (ii) the entry does not and will not violate or infringe upon the intellectual property rights or other rights of any other person or entity; and (iii) the entry does not and will not violate any applicable laws and is not and will not be defamatory or libelous. Each Entrant/Nominator/Team hereby agrees to indemnify and hold the “Promotion Entities” (as defined below) harmless from and against any and all third party claims, actions or proceedings of any kind and from any and all damages, liabilities, costs and expenses relating to or arising out of any breach or alleged breach of any of the warranties, representations or agreements of entrant hereunder.

GRANT OF RIGHTS: Each Entrant/Nominee/Team irrevocably grants to Sponsor, its designees, affiliates, successors and assigns, the non-exclusive, irrevocable, fully paid, universal license to use, copy, sublicense, transmit, distribute, publicly perform, publish, delete or display his/her Submission in any media now known or hereafter devised including, but not limited to all forms of electronic media, print media and all forms of internet and wireless protocol in perpetuity and throughout the universe for advertising, marketing, publicity and promotional purposes in connection with the Promotion and other promotions. Sponsor shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to edit, composite, morph, scan, duplicate, or alter the entry for any purpose which Sponsor deems necessary or desirable, and each Entrant/Nominee/Team irrevocably waives any and all so-called moral rights they may have therein.

GENERAL RULES: Personal information submitted by Entrant/Nominators/Teams is subject to the Sponsor’s privacy policy available at http://www.syngenta-us.com/legal/privacypolicy.html. Except where prohibited, by participating in the Contest, Entrant/Nominators/Teams agree to release and hold harmless Sponsor, The American Society of Farm Managers & Rural Appraisers, Farm Journal, Inc., prize providers and each of their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, distributors, retailers, sales representatives, advertising and Contest agencies and each of their respective officers, directors and employees of them (the “Promotion Entities”) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation or attempt to participate in the Contest or acceptance, receipt or use or misuse of the prize, including, but not limited to: (a) interrupted or unavailable network, server or other connections, miscommunications, failed telephone, computer hardware, software and other technical failures of any kind, including, unauthorized human intervention, garbled, jumbled or delayed computer transmissions or other errors of any kind, whether human, mechanical or electronic, including without limitation, the incorrect or inaccurate capture of entry information online regardless of cause that may limit a user's ability to participate in the Contest; (b) technical errors related to computers, servers, providers, printers or telephone or network lines; (c) typographical or other errors in printing; or incorrect announcements of any kind; (d) errors in the administration of the Contest or the processing of Entries; lost, late, damaged, misdirected, illegible, delayed, incomplete, unintelligible or misdirected Entries, Entries not received by the Entry deadline; (e) injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused directly or indirectly, in whole or in part from Entrant’s participation in the Contest or receipt, use or misuse of any prize. All materials become the exclusive property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.

INTERNET CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS, AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW. Sponsor reserves the right to cancel or modify the Contest if fraud, misconduct or technical failures destroy the integrity of the Contest or if a computer virus, bug or other technical problem corrupts the administration, security or proper administration of the program as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. In the event of termination, a notice will be posted at www.farmmanageroftheyear.com and judging will be conducted from among all eligible Entries received prior to the time of termination. The failure of the Sponsor to comply with any provision of these Official Rules due to an act of God, hurricane, war, fire, riot, earthquake, pandemic, epidemic, outbreak, terrorism, act of public enemies, or actions of governmental authorities outside of the control of Sponsor (excepting compliance with applicable codes and regulations) or other force majeure event will not be considered a breach of these Official Rules. Proof of submitting an Entry will not be deemed to be proof of receipt by Sponsor. Multiple Entrants are not permitted to share the same email address. Any attempt by a participant to exceed or manipulate the entry limitations, by using multiple/different email addresses or any other methods, will void that Entrant’s entries and that Entrant may be disqualified. Acceptance of prize constitutes permission to the Sponsor and their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, and suppliers to use Award winner’s Entry, name and/or likeness for purposes of advertising and trade without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.

PLEASE NOTE: It is your sole responsibility to review and understand your employer’s policies regarding your eligibility to participate in trade promotions. Sponsor disclaims any and all liability or responsibility for disputes arising between an employee and their employer related to participation in this Contest and/or acceptance of a prize.

ARBITRATION/CHOICE OF LAW: Except where prohibited, Entrants/Nominators/Teams agree that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest or any prize awarded, or the determination of the winner shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by arbitration pursuant to the Rules of the American Arbitration Association then effective, and any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this Contest but in no event attorneys’ fees, punitive, incidental, consequential or other damages. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of Entrants/Nominators/Teams and Sponsor and/or Sponsor’s agencies in connection with the Contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of North Carolina, without regard for conflicts of law doctrine, and all proceeding shall take place in North Carolina.

NAME OF AWARD WINNER: The name of the winner will be announced during the 2021 ASFMRA Annual Convention scheduled to take place November 2-5, 2021, at the Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in Las Vegas, NV, and posted at www.farmmanageroftheyear.com.
